CFP: \"Mechanisms of Lordship\" at the International Medieval Congress in
Kalamazoo, Michigan May 12-15, 2011

Seigneurie, the society for the study of lordship in the middle ages,
invites paper proposals for a panel entitled \"Mechanisms of Lordship\". Our
goal is to initiate a discussion about the various tools (such as seals,
diplomas, letters patent, deeds, fief and court rolls, registers, financial
accounts, etc.) and strategies by which medieval lords maintained their
lordship, in the hopes of discovering common techniques and trends as well
as those specific in region and time. Papers might address (but are, of
course, not limited to):

--the development of diplomatic tools across space and time

--the utilization and manipulation of specific tools to effect certain
strategies of lordship

--the influence of bureaucratization and royal centralization on lordship

--policies of bureaucratization and centralization employed on the non-royal
level

--instruments of bureaucratization, such as chancery courts and clerks

--similar topics of your own devising

Please submit a one-page abstract (for a 20-minute paper) with contact
information (name, postal address, email, and affiliation) and a list of the
audio-visual equipment you will require to Katie Sjursen
(ksjursen@gmail.com) by September 10, 2010.
